Before Gregg Owen became a prosecutor, he was a working musician.

He played keyboards professionally as a teenager, toured and recorded with bands including the Shady Daze, the American Breed, and Jerico, and earned his law degree while still moving between music and the courtroom.

Then came the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office.

Gregg became an Assistant State’s Attorney and was later assigned to 26th and California, Chicago’s criminal courthouse, where murder cases were tried in an atmosphere shaped by pressure, politics, fear, and corruption.

His background gave him an unusual eye for the courtroom.

He understood performance. He understood timing.

He understood when a witness was closing down — and when a jury was leaning in.

Now he tells the stories behind the cases: the evidence, the witnesses, the strategy, the mistakes, and the moments that decided whether a killer walked or went to prison.
